Are there different light modes for the clock part?

The clock numbers themselves do not change color—just the blue and it stays the same brightness. The little LED light thing on top can be set to one of many different colors or be white or change to cycle through all the colors. It is chargeable and removable from the base. Make sure you read and keep the instructions on setting the clock.

Will the phone hold in place magnetically?

Yes it will hold it and charge, but the magnets aren't super strong. You can rest the phone on the stand so it will stay in place and charge while being able to be read while it's charging.

It is described as "magnetic". does that mean it's magsafe compatible? will my iphone center itself over the charger by using the magnet?

The phone rests on the base of the charger and there are some magnets that are in the charging pad, but it doesn't suspend the phone with those magnets.
